Modern Vintage

By The Watches of Switzerland Group 3 Minute Read

The Roaring Twenties is an era revered for its fashion and flamboyance, and even though a century has passed, the style is still influencing our designs today.

The decade is associated with the Great Gatsby-esque lifestyle – parties, flapper dresses, cocktails and the new freedom people enjoyed as World War I faded into memory.

Fashions changed as well, with the formality of the Edwardian era left behind and brands such as Chanel spearheading a shift towards elegant yet comfortable fashion, complemented by striking jewellery. Our Renee collection takes its design cues from this fabulous period and was inspired by pieces from our archives. Exclusively available at Mappin & Webb, the line is named after the French derivative of the Roman word ‘Renatus’, meaning reborn, as these vintage styles have been given a contemporary refresh for our new season.

In with the Old

A design that takes its influence directly from the vintage pieces of the Art Deco era is the three-row diamond collection. This placement of gemstones makes a bold, statement-making style, creating the illusion of stacked jewels. The Renee collection uses the rectangular baguette-cut stone, and the large flat surface of the cut provides a sparkling contrast to the round brilliant-cut stones sitting next to it. Our Renee 18-carat white-gold three-row diamond hoops imitate a trio of hoops – the perfect solution if you like the stacked-earring trend but don’t want to commit to multiple piercings. The piece pairs perfectly with our Renee 18-carat white-gold three-row diamond ring. Cocktail rings came into fashion in the 1920s, and their glamorous, extravagant designs remain popular a century later.

Full Circle

Another Mappin & Webb collection that combines various diamond cuts is the Renee mixed diamond circle line. These delicate diamond pieces are inspired by the ‘streamlined’ styles of the post-war period, with clean, simple shapes that are easy to wear and pair effortlessly with any outfit – think Coco Chanel and her classically elegant pieces. The Renee 18-carat white-gold mixed diamond circle drop earrings combine dainty baguette-cut diamonds with brilliant-cut gemstones. This contemporary take on a timeless style sits on a white-gold stud, ensuring the diamonds always face forward and creating a beautiful framing for the face. The halo design is reproduced in a pendant and hangs from a delicate white-gold chain.

Make the Cut

The Art Deco period saw gem-cutters develop new ways to cut and shape precious stones. As a result, intricate settings and ‘mosaic’ designs became more common within the jewellery world. A new genre of bold, geometric shapes was born, and our Renee collection includes many pieces modelled on this style. New this season are our ‘princess-cut’ pieces, which boast a higher carat weight than previous Renee releases. A square or princess-cut stone (shaped to resemble an upside-down pyramid) is admired for its high level of brilliance; the large flat surface provides a window into the facets that create the ‘point’ of the setting, giving beams of reflected light. The pendant, stud earrings and diamond ring all feature a large, glistening, square-cut focal point, framed by four baguette-cut diamonds and four additional brilliant-cut sparklers at each of the four corners. The setting creates the kind of beautiful mosaic-style design that was so popular in the Roaring Twenties – and it’s still capable of stealing the show today.
