About Nivada Grenchen

Nivada Grenchen has been part of Swiss watchmaking since 1926, when Otto Wüllimann, Hermann Schindler and Jakob Schneider founded Wüllimann, Schneider, Nivada S.A. in Grenchen, Switzerland. Schneider’s son, Max, later succeeded his father and was leading the company by its 50th anniversary in 1976. From the outset, the brand built its reputation on practical, reliable timepieces and was among the early Swiss makers to embrace automatic movements.

Its presence in the United States grew through a partnership with Croton Watch Co., which explains why many vintage examples carry the Croton name, the Nivada Grenchen name, or both. In the 1950s, the brand’s reputation for robust watches was strengthened by the Antarctic, a water-resistant automatic model worn during the U.S. Navy’s Operation Deep Freeze expedition to Antarctica in 1955–56, led by Admiral Richard Byrd.

The Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver followed in the early 1960s and became one of Nivada Grenchen’s defining successes. Designed as a multi-purpose chronograph for aviation, diving and sport, it combined a rotating bezel, chronograph functions and strong water resistance. Like many Swiss brands, Nivada Grenchen struggled during the quartz crisis and faded from view in the late 1970s, before its revival began in 2018 under Guillaume Laidet, leading to modern reissues of icons such as the Antarctic and Chronomaster.
