Mappin & Webb has a beautiful range of coloured gemstones – and each hue is believed to have its own meanings and special properties.

The use of coloured stones dates back to the Roman Empire, when they were used as a decorative way of displaying wealth, and were also believed to be exquisite gifts from the gods. Today, there are many reasons why people might select a gem of a particular colour. It could be that a person wants to wear their birthstone, while others might hand-pick their favourite jewel based on which colour best complements their skin tone. And whether it’s an engagement ring or a special pair of earrings, there are all sorts of ways you can incorporate coloured gems.

Here, we’ve picked some of our favourite blue- and green-toned jewels. Well-known for their soothing qualities, blue and green gems are said to bring an inner calm to the wearer, and therefore lend themselves to all sorts of situations.

For the Big Day

One of the best occasions to wear blue gems would be when walking down the aisle. Not only does sparkling azure really pop next to a white gown, but it also fulfils the ‘something blue’ tradition. For a slightly more subtle look, our Carrington collection is the perfect set to complement the big day. The 18-carat white-gold aquamarine and diamond ring, earrings, and matching pendant exude vintage glamour. The pieces display a brilliant-cut aquamarine gemstone encircled by a halo of diamonds, and all three provide flashes of differing oceanic tones as they catch the light.

We have some stunning alternative engagement ring options that would be the ideal accompaniment to an ‘I do’ or even a cocktail party! Our platinum pear-cut aquamarine and diamond ring adds a beautiful blue accent, as does our stunning 18-carat white-gold, aquamarine and diamond pendant. Our 18-carat white-gold diamond and aquamarine ring is another real showstopper, boasting a 4.90-carat aquamarine stone surrounded by baguette-cut diamonds.

A Sea of Green

A colour that has made waves everywhere from interior design to fashion is a light wash of seafoam green, and we have plenty of pieces to match this trend. Three of our favourites are from Kiki McDonough’s collection, and each boasts a breathtaking cushion-cut green amethyst.

Set against gold, the necklace features a diamond loop to enhance the calming tone of the centre stone. For the matching earrings, the exquisite green amethyst cushion drop is detachable, allowing the diamond hoops to be worn on their own if so desired. Completing this trio, the 18-carat gold ring is encrusted with sparkling diamonds surrounding the centrepiece – a stunning green amethyst that sits within tapered shoulders to ensure a comfortable fit.

Try adding a twinkle of blue or green to your jewellery collection and see if it brings a little extra peace and serenity to your life! Our experts are available to help you select from our rainbow-toned collections.
