In celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we are delighted to present our Limited Edition Vinea collection.

This exemplary collection, overseen by Crown Jeweller and Mappin & Webb’s master craftsman, Mark Appleby, takes inspiration from nature’s meandering vines. Delicate marquise-cut diamonds are expertly crafted to create a contemporary entwined aesthetic, with mixed cut styles available in neckwear, wristwear, rings, and earrings.

The collection is a mesmerising reinterpretation of classic floral motifs, transforming traditional flower inspired designs into contemporary designs that add luxury to your everyday jewellery wardrobe.

Marquise-cut diamonds are at the core of the collection, which comprises of 11 pieces inspired by trailing vines. The collection is a marriage of two halves with more dramatic pieces featuring larger marquise-cut stones, gathered to form clusters inspired by leaves which form pretty earrings and playful pendants that strike a bold and beautiful silhouette. These perfectly contrast with the more delicate designs crafted from pavé round diamonds combined with marquise-cut diamonds to create a tumbling vine of precious stones. These trailing creepers form luxurious bracelets and a spectacular necklace that caresses the skin, and rings that twist gracefully around the finger. Completing the collection is a stunning platinum engagement ring featuring a large central marquise-cut diamond flanked with both marquise and brilliant-cut stones, which radiates vintage glamour with a contemporary twist.

This exquisite collection has been overseen by Crown Jeweller and Mappin & Webb master craftsman, Mark Appleby, with a mark inside each piece to honour his stamp of approval. Each exquisite piece harnesses the expert quality and craftsmanship only to be expected by Mappin & Webb.

We invited Mark Appleby, Crown Jeweller and Mappin & Webb’s master craftsman, to share his involvement with the design and creation of this exquisite new collection.

Delighted to be speaking with you Mark, thank you so much for agreeing to take part in this interview. Please can you tell our readers a bit more about yourself and the role that you play here at Mappin & Webb?

I have been in the Jewellery trade for over 40 years now and trained as a jewellery restorer with many masters. During this time, I worked in some of the most prestigious jewel houses such as Garrards , Asprey’s and now with Mappin & Webb. In the course of my 14 years at Garrards, I assisted and worked with two previous Crown Jewellers.

It was in 2001 that I set up Mappin & Webb’s first Jewellery Workshop, with skilled mounters, setters, CAD technicians and polishers, all working to very exacting standards. I now hold the position of Director of Jewellery services for Mappin & Webb which involves managing a 12 strong team of jewellers. Their vast experience enables us to tackle all styles of new and complicated commissions, as well as repairing and restoring our clients’ family treasures.

I have been fortunate to be at the forefront of many changes to the traditional ways of the working jeweller. My colleagues and I helped to introduce laser technology and CAD (Computer Aided Design) to keep the Mappin & Webb Jewellery Workshop and studios at the forefront of the manufacturing industry.

I have worked as Personal Jeweller to Her Majesty The Queen since 2010 and was asked to become Crown Jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen in August 2017. This is my greatest honour and appointment of a lifetime.

I understand that you were involved in reviewing the samples of the new Limited Edition Vinea collection. What suggested development changes did you make to the design samples and selections in the initial stages and why?

I worked with Mappin & Webb Jewellery Buyer, Daniella Jayes, on this great collection of jewellery, along with our design team. After viewing the pieces at varying stages, I suggested a few subtle changes to some of the mechanisms and slight changes in the design. Once these had been implemented, the look and feel of the collection was ready for manufacture.

As Crown Jeweller to Her Majesty The Queen, it must take a lot to impress you. How did the Vinea Collection achieve your seal of approval, and subsequently the LJW crown mark?

I have seen many, many collections, and different ways to manufacture and market jewellery over the years. This elegant and well-crafted unique style of jewellery lends itself to many genres. With its understated beauty and clever design, I’m sure our clients will very much enjoy wearing a Mappin & Webb design lead collection.

How would you introduce the Vinea Collection to a client?

I am sure that the Vinea designs will be well received by our clients. Once they get to see, feel, and try on these elegant pieces, the jewellery will speak for itself. Our boutique jewellery experts will be delighted to help our clients understand the history and authenticity of each unique piece of jewellery.

And finally, which piece within the collection is your favourite and why?

To be honest all the exceptional pieces that make up the Vinea suite are well manufactured and finished to the high standards that you would expect from Mappin & Webb, but if I had to choose, for me it would be the necklace. This should sit very comfortably on the neck and with its subtle elegance, will be a big ‘Wow’ when being worn at any special event.
