Explore our buyers’ edit of January blues that will bring joy and happiness to a dull winter’s day.
With the festivities a fond but distant memory, January can sometimes feel like a very cold and lonely month, as we batten down the hatches and watch the daylight disappear. But the January blues are just a self-fulfilling prophecy. Christmas celebrations may well be over but there is now a whole new year to embrace and a calendar to fill with exciting social events and diary dates to enjoy with friends and family. So, dial up your style and admire our host of blue gemstone jewellery, taking you through the winter and beyond with a sparkle and a smile, and providing stylish inspiration for an exciting year ahead.
According to the International Gem Society, there are at least 37 blue coloured gemstones, but among those that are most frequently spoken about, and in highest demand, include the blue sapphire, blue topaz, aquamarine, and tanzanite.
The Velvet-Blue Hues of Sapphire
Although the sapphire is found in a variety of different colours, it is most typically recognised as a blue gemstone and the birthstone for September. Adorned by royalty past and present, it has been associated with wisdom, faithfulness, and good fortune. It is no surprise that the sapphire has become a popular gemstone as an alternative centre stone to the diamond in a traditional engagement ring.
Sapphires sit within the family of the four most prized gemstones to include diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. Their rarity, durability and sheer beauty afford them this status and their striking colours appear even more stunning when enhanced in a diamond jewellery setting.
The Calming Shades of Blue Topaz
The beautiful shades of December’s birthstone, the blue topaz, are captivating - from ice blue through to the brighter shade of Swiss blue and darker saturation of London Blue. Said to promote harmony and relaxation, the blue topaz is associated with serenity and peacefulness and has been linked with fighting off negative energy.
Akin to the sapphire, the blue topaz is also representative of love and loyalty and its symbolism renders it a perfect gift for a close friend or loved one to illustrate your commitment.
Dive into the Ocean Blue Aquamarine
It comes as no surprise to learn that the name ‘Aquamarine’ is derived from the Latin term for ‘seawater’. Its stunning blue-green colour is reminiscent of clear blue seas and oceans and can be likened to the stunning glacial turquoise waters of Canada’s infamous Lake Louise.
This March birthstone, symbolic of the sea, in folklore was said to protect sailors and travellers of the ocean. Historically it has been found in large weights, with the largest rough aquamarine found in Brazil in 1910 and weighing in at an incredible 243lbs! When cut down and faceted for use in jewellery, the gemstone collectively amounted to over 100,000 carats. Consequently, the aquamarine gemstone makes a stunning cocktail ring or statement piece of jewellery for any occasion where you’re looking to make a bold and beautiful impression.
The Striking Blue-Violet Hues of Tanzanite
One thousand times rarer than the diamond, tanzanite is truly spectacular. Not only does its rarity make it more desirable, but its beauty does not disappoint. The colours of blue, purple, and red can all be found within this gemstone which is striking in colour – available in shades ranging from blue to purple and violet-blue with a largely intense saturation that is enhanced by the craftsmanship and cut of the gemstone.
Along with blue topaz, tanzanite is also recognised as a birthstone representative of the month of December. It contrasts beautifully against cooler metals such as white gold and platinum, or if you’re hoping to elevate the red and purple colours within this gemstone, then yellow or rose gold will enhance these with their warm tones.
